Upgraded controller · 5–30V

Wider strip support — choose 5V, 12V or 24V, sold alongside the standard 5V controller.

The upgraded controller supports a much wider range of LED strips by letting you choose between common voltages such as 5V, 12V and 24V.

The voltage supplied through the controller's main power input is passed directly to the LED outputs. An internal voltage regulation system independently regulates and stabilizes power for the controller's own electronics, so they operate properly regardless of the LED supply voltage.

Update · Sep 10, 2026The PCBs and components have arrived and the first units have been assembled. Early testing shows everything working as expected. Preorders are expected to open within the next few days, with a target release date of approximately Sep 21, 2026.

Art-Net & sACN

Network lighting protocol support, opening the door to Resolume and professional lighting workflows.

Art-Net and sACN communication are currently working as expected over Ethernet. Wireless communication over Wi-Fi is also being developed, but it is not yet stable enough for release.

Optimization of wireless performance will continue, while wired Ethernet support will be introduced first in the next software update. This will begin expanding OctoRig's compatibility with external lighting controllers and software.

Ethernet & DMX adapter

An adapter that connects OctoRig to external lighting equipment over Ethernet and DMX in / out.

The Ethernet and DMX adapter is being developed to allow the OctoRig controller to communicate with external lighting equipment and control systems.

It is intended to support Ethernet input as well as DMX input and output, letting OctoRig integrate with lighting control decks, software and other DMX-compatible equipment. Input and output layouts will be configurable directly through the OctoRig software.

Update · Sep 10, 2026The PCBs and components have arrived. Assembly and initial testing are scheduled for today and tomorrow. If testing goes as expected, the adapters should become available for purchase within the next week.

Position-aware mapping & matrix support

A mapping system that knows where your lights physically are, with support for LED matrices.

The current Layout Designer lets you configure multiple LED sections and shapes, but it is not yet position-aware and does not currently support LED matrices.

A major redesign of the mapping system is underway so you can create more accurate representations of your physical LED layouts. This gives significantly more flexibility for irregular configurations, custom shapes and matrices, while allowing effects to move and synchronize seamlessly across multiple sections. A working beta is planned for the next software update.

Expanded MIDI

MIDI triggering is already in the software — more mappable controls are being added and tested.

Basic MIDI support is currently available, but its functionality is limited and the configuration process is not as user-friendly as intended.

The next expansion is focused on improving the mapping system and adding support for controls such as knobs, sliders and other continuous MIDI inputs. This will let you control effect parameters dynamically and create more flexible live-control setups.

Scriptable & shareable effects

User-scriptable custom effects, shareable with the community through the app.

The goal of scriptable effects is to give you the ability to create completely custom effects while still taking advantage of OctoRig's existing systems.

Scripts will be able to access established features such as the audio-reactive engine, effect parameters, sliders and other built-in tools, making it possible to create highly customized effects without building every component from scratch. Custom scripts are also planned to be shareable through an effect library, so you can publish your creations and download effects made by other members of the OctoRig community.

Hardware & power
What types of LED strips does OctoRig support?

The current controller is designed for standard 5V addressable LED strips using the WS2812B-style single-wire protocol — including WS2812B, WS2812, WS2813, and SK6812 ("NeoPixel"-style) strips. An upgraded controller supporting approximately 5–30V is in production and testing, which will expand support to 12V and 24V installations.

How many outputs does the controller have?

Four independent LED outputs. Each output provides data, power, and ground, so compatible strips can be connected and powered directly through the controller.

How much power can the controller handle?

The main power path supports up to 8A total, shared across the four outputs. For larger installations, inject additional power directly into the LED strips.

How many LEDs can I connect?

The controller drives large numbers of addressable LEDs across its four outputs. On longer runs, power matters as much as pixel count — plan on extra power injection.

How often should I inject power?

With 5V WS2812B strips, roughly every 300 pixels and at the end of longer strips is a good rule of thumb. The exact requirement depends on brightness, effects, wiring, and your power supply.

Why do my LEDs turn yellow or shift color down the strip?

That's voltage drop. Every LED and every length of wire adds resistance, so voltage gradually falls along a long strip — white shows it most because red, green, and blue are all on at once. Adding power injection points usually fixes it.

Will there be a 12V version?

Yes. An upgraded controller supporting approximately 5–30V is in production and testing. It will be sold alongside the standard 5V controller and makes OctoRig much easier to use with 12V and 24V installations.

Connectivity
Can I control OctoRig over Wi-Fi?

Yes. The controller connects to your local Wi-Fi network and is controlled wirelessly from the OctoRig software.

How do I connect the controller over Wi-Fi?

Connect your device to the OctoRig Wi-Fi hotspot — the setup portal lets you join the controller to your home or venue network.

Then, with your computer on the same network, go to Config → Rigs, select Wi-Fi as the connection type, and click Scan. When the controller appears, select it and click Apply.

Will Wi-Fi work reliably at crowded venues?

OctoRig supports wireless control, but Wi-Fi performance can't be guaranteed in crowded venues with heavy wireless interference. When reliability is critical, use a wired connection.

How can I check whether my Wi-Fi connection is good?

In the latest software, go to Config → Toggle and enable Board Status to monitor the controller's wireless connection and signal strength.

Can I connect directly through USB-C?

Yes. OctoRig can be controlled directly over USB-C instead of Wi-Fi — the preferred option when you need the most reliable connection possible.

Does OctoRig support Ethernet?

Ethernet support is in development, using an Ethernet adapter through USB-C. Initially it will provide the same type of control as the normal USB-C connection, with full Ethernet pixel streaming planned as part of the continued Art-Net/sACN development.

Effects & control
Does OctoRig support sound-reactive effects?

Yes — sound-reactive effects are built in. Audio is captured digitally from the computer, so a microphone isn't required for normal sound-reactive operation.

Do I need a microphone?

No. The software uses audio directly from the computer, so effects react to music without playing it through speakers and capturing it again with a mic.

Can I use MIDI to control OctoRig?

Yes. MIDI control is integrated into the software, letting effects and other controls be triggered externally. MIDI functionality is continuing to be expanded and tested.

Can I use multiple OctoRig controllers together?

Yes. Multiple rigs can be added to the software and controlled together, so installations can grow beyond the four outputs of a single controller.

Can I divide one LED strip into different sections?

Yes. Outputs can be divided into multiple sections and shapes, so different portions of an LED run can be treated separately within the software.

Can I map the physical position of my lights?

OctoRig already supports mapping and multiple shapes. A more advanced position-aware mapping system is in development, so the software can better represent the physical arrangement of your lights and simulate how effects travel across an installation.

Can I create custom effects?

OctoRig includes customizable built-in effects, and expanding custom-effect support is part of ongoing development — including making effects more user-scriptable and eventually shareable through the software.

Shows & music
Can I create a show that runs without the computer?

Yes. The Installation Show Creator builds timeline-based shows that can be saved to the controller — ideal for permanent installations where you don't want a computer constantly connected.

Can shows be synchronized to music?

Yes. OctoRig supports timeline-based shows synchronized with music, including links to services such as Spotify.

Can I upload an MP3 with a show?

MP3 files can be used while creating shows, but copyrighted audio can't be stored and redistributed through the OctoRig server with shared shows. Shared shows using copyrighted music need an associated source such as Spotify or YouTube instead of the audio file itself.

Integrations
Does OctoRig support Art-Net or sACN?

Art-Net and sACN integration are currently in development. The goal is to support OctoRig hardware and eventually compatible external controllers as well.

Can I use the software with a third-party Art-Net controller?

Support for external Art-Net/sACN controllers is being developed. The current plan: OctoRig controllers get access without an additional subscription, while using the software with third-party controllers would likely require one.

Will OctoRig work with Resolume?

Resolume integration is being worked on through Art-Net/sACN support, with the goal of letting OctoRig slot into existing professional lighting and video workflows.

Troubleshooting
Why doesn't the software preview look exactly like my LEDs?

The preview and the controller run separate effect engines — the software sends effect parameters rather than streaming every pixel, so the preview won't always be perfectly 1:1. They should still behave similarly; large delays, missing hits, or sections responding at different times usually indicate a connection issue.

Why are effects delayed, or sections responding at different times?

If you're on Wi-Fi, first check connection quality with Board Status — a weak or congested network can delay commands. Connecting through USB-C is a quick way to confirm whether Wi-Fi is the problem.

Ordering & shipping
Is the app free?

Yes — the app is completely free right now, and will stay free for at least the first 6 months after launch. Down the line a small subscription (most likely around $4.99 USD/month) may be added to cover cloud storage, user-data protection, and ongoing updates — you'll get plenty of notice before anything changes.

How long does shipping take?

Every OctoRig is made to order, so shipping can take up to 2½ weeks depending on stock and order volume. You'll get a shipping confirmation as soon as yours is on the way.

Do you ship internationally?

Yes. OctoRig ships internationally — cost depends on the destination and service, and VAT, duties, or other import charges may apply depending on the country.

Can I get LED strips or cables in custom lengths?

Yes. LED strips, extension cables, and wiring can be supplied in different lengths depending on the installation, with pricing quoted accordingly.

Can you make custom versions for OEM products or installations?

Potentially, yes. For larger OEM or commercial applications, a custom controller and adapted software can be developed depending on quantity, features, budget, and application.
